Missing Rider
I have lived in West Maui (Lahaina) for the past four plus years and there are areas that could be dangerous even here in "Paradise". I take nothing for granted and practice Situational Awareness wherever I find myself.
Having said all that... getting back on topic, the major difference between Mexico and the United states is that you have certain rights under the U.S. Flag that you don't have in Mexico. Also, I have been to the Country of Panama four times and I never had a "scary" incident either with a Panamanian citizen or with Panamanian Police or Military. No problems, probably because of the U.S. presence for 100 years. Also the country of Panama has water, electricity, and health care to U.S. Standards, once again because of the 100 year U.S. presence. Panama and Costa Rica are in my judgement the two safest countries in Central America, yet there are areas in both countries that I would not venture into.

It begs the question why he didn't call anyone for a couple of weeks? I understand he was in a remote location and cell service is scarce, but cell phone dying isn't a good excuse. He should have had an adapter on his bike to keep his cell phone charged.
Maybe he didn't want to be found?
