What about bike seating with for a while with ethanol fuel in it ? Explain
I just picked up 2005 883L practically brand new, lady owned and the bike did sat for a while.
On low the bike runs great, but if I push it on high revs, the bike acts like running out of gas, hesitates.
I also get the occasional backfiring, at different timing, taking of, quick small acceleration, etc
The prior owner put cycle shack slip ons with an sns air filter and choke, so not sure if air mixture is correct, but it idles fine once it warms up although it takes a while to warm up.
So before I start messing with the idle air mixture settings and screw that up I will try the CPS from a 2006 model to see if that helps.
Someone mention that I might be reaching the rev limiter?
But the hesitation when you want power is not fun.
I think you have some cleaning to do too. I am no expert on ethanol but I know it eats aluminum and fiberglass like acid. I will never use it for anything
I've started having a similar issue with my 2003 Heritage Softail. Just bought her in February. Only started after a weekend trip up to DC in March. I'll be at speed, usually just cruising and I'll start getting pops and back fires, then sputtering and finally no power. Killing the engine and restarting usually handles it but not always. I've pushed Injector cleaner through, and I only use premium gas. I've replaced the Stage 1 filter. checked my plugs, they look brand new. And every attempt to research the issue leads me to: It could be anything. One consistent trait I've noticed is it only ever seems to occur if I'm under half a tank of gas. So I'm going to pull the tank off and check to make sure there's no water, the lines are good, the filter is good, the pump is good. etc etc. I think I may have gotten some bad gas in DC and it's fouled something up.
The plugs if not 5/8" , are most likely 11/16". If you don't have a 11/16" plug socket either use a 11/16" combo wrench or a 18mm spark plug socket. You will have an impossible time trying to find a 11/16" spark plug socket but you will be able to find a 18mm at your local auto parts store.
Take the carb off and clean it and rebuild it. Its 13 years old.
Dump the stock carb & throw on a Mikuni. You won't believe the difference.
+1 on the Mikuni.... I had a Till on mine in 71,, after a few issues I got a Mikuni.. after that it ran ran a lot better and felt like I'd put a 4 barrel carb on it VS a 2 barrel carb..
Seafoam. Under $7 at Walmart. Put 2 ounces per gallon of fresh gas to clean out carb or injectors. 1 oz per gal thereafter. If that doesn't do it soak jets in full strength solution. I use it in everything I own.
