Default Do I need a starter

Hey all out there!! I have a 2005 heritage softail. The issue is the starter will spin but only engages the jack shaft when it wont's to. Should I wait to order a new starter or remove the old one and see if there's a bad spring I'm undecided. Any Ideas would be a great help. THANKS!!

How old is your battery? How many miles on bike? Do you make lots of stops and have to start your bike a lot?

First, I would check all your electrical connections and make sure your battery is good. If all that checks out and it still does the same thing then it's more likely going to be your starter bendix and/or solenoid is not engaging the flywheel properly. Pulling the primary cover and engaging the starter will probably give you a better idea of what's wrong. With the cover off, just plug the plugs so the engine won't start.

Intermittent jackshaft engagement could possibly the starter drive clutch.

If it fires up easily when the jackshaft DOES engage,No you don't need a starter.
