Sad story. Ran the red and no helmets? Not that the helmets would save a life but why not hedge your bets. I feel bad for anyone involved or affected by this tragedy. rip
These stories increase as riders come out of winter hibernation.
Sounds like the riders were escorted by police motors but these rides get so big, not every intersection gets covered and protected.
No doubt the fatality thought going through red lights was permitted since he had just done so moments before at another intersection.
This could end up as a wrongful death lawsuit against the city Scottsdale and a reason why many PD's are reluctant to provide escorts.
If the intersection isn't being controlled, obey the traffic signal.
Even if you have a civilian "blocker" be careful, civilians have no legal authority to control traffic at intersections.

ATGATT. My dad, who has been riding for the better of 40 years always taught me dress for the wreck, not for the ride.

Exactly. Never assume you have the right of ay, especially at a red light.
RIP to the rider and praying for a speedy for a rapid recovery for his passenger.
I did the Crusaders for Children SOA ride today for AZ Bike Week. Probably 1000+ bikes for it. They must have said a dozen times that unless there are police blocking the intersections, you must stop for red lights. I had a guy lock up his brakes next to me because he was too busy talking with his wife and messing with his radio and not watching that we had to stop for a light. Needless to say, I sped up a bit to get him a couple riders back from me.
Some friends were on that ride yesterday and they were told the same thing that you must obey the traffic signals. The accident happened behind them, so they did not hear about it till they got up to Westworld.
This was the first and probably last large group ride I do. It is cool to see all the bikes together but too many people just don't pay attention.
Many of the riders on that ride are blaming the cops. Seems like no matter what you are promised, common sense and paying attention should be first on the mind.

Blame the cops, exactly what I predicted. A symptom of society not taking responsibility for their own actions. It's a pretty simple concept, if a cop isn't directing traffic then obey the phreaking traffic signal.
