The BRC only teaches you how to operate a motorcycle, it does not teach you how to ride. Experience teaches you how to ride.

Which also means that you have no idea what is important to you in a bike.

I always recommend starting off on a cheap metric. If you don't like it, then you're not stuck upside in a financed bike. If you drop it, you're not dropping $16k on the ground. Chances are you'll get out of it what you bought it for...and lastly, it will teach you what you like and what is important to you in a bike.

This is the best advice you can get.

Some here wont like this suggestion, but if you've never rode motorcycles, much less a Harley, you may not like the heat they generate either.
The advice about a metric is good, but if you want a Harley, and weight of the bike is a concern, go try out the new street models.
My wife is interested in getting a bike, has tried my heritage, too heavy, has tried a sportster a friend was selling, to top heavy/ awkward feeling.
She sat on the street at the dealer and said it reminded her of the Honda bike her and her brother had when they were young, not top heavy and fit her well.
And you can buy two street models for less then the price of one big twin.

You've both been blessed with time. Pick the bikes you want, and ride; without regret. You'll know the right bike when you see it...👍

Yeah, skippy. The oil cap on that Softail Slim was like putting a hot poker to the inside of my right thigh every time I had to put my feet down. I ended up sitting at the stop lights with my right foot on the floorboard to ease the pain.

By the way congrats on your cancer being in remission, I have a friend who has one more chemo treatment left, hopefully its good news after that.

Agreed, take the time to get the class completed, be sure that's what you truly want, then get out to a HD for a test ride, on a few styles....
Goodluck either way brother.....

I'm long on money and short on time so in the long run if I drop a $16,000 bike that's okay in the grand scheme of life it don't make a damn difference. I wish I had more time to work my way up to the bike that I really really want but the fact of the matter is is that this may be my only riding season and I want to spend it enjoying every minute regardless of what I'm riding.

I think it will be totally awesome to spend time writing with my wife and knowing it's something she can do long after I'm gone. After everything she has done for me, if she wants a Harley by god that's what she's getting. Plus she'll look damn sexy on a bike!

Gotta' respect that. My little brother and I were going to get Harleys and ride together. A brain tumor took him before we got the chance. When I ride, he's one of the reasons I do. Props to you...👍
