Default First Road Trip

Hi all,

Ive been on bikes since i was a little kid. Albeit Dirt primarily (im 27 now)

But i bought my first HD last year, and have already traded it in on a Fat Bob.

My Street experience prior to the HD's consisted of a couple different sport bikes. But never took those very far.

This weekend i am planning on doing my first road trip with the bike. it has right at 1k miles on it and i did the 1k service this last weekend.

the plan is to leave the Southern California (San Bernardino to be exact) area and head up to Laughlin after work. Spend the night at a friends house. Check out the River Run a little bit. Leave from Laughlin Saturday morning and ride down to Mesa AZ to another friends house.

My Dyna has floor boards, and a windshield. I was wondering. Is there some sort of a backrest that will work with the stock 1up seat for the Driver/rider?

Also what things do i need to know? What items should i plan on bringing. Im limited on storage and will have a backpack. A smallish tank bag and my parents triglide (they are riding with me). But limited space in their tourpak or trunk because their stuff needs to fit too.

Thanks for any input you cna provide

Not giving you any helpful information here, but how do you like the Fat Bob so far? I'm thinking about getting one. I'm 6' 1" and wondering if it'll "fit."
Meanwhile back at the ranch, some knowledgeable smart guy will actually answer what you asked.

LOL thanks!

I love it, its been a great experience compared to my Sportster. Even though it spent the first two weeks in the service dept.

Nothing major, just a noise i wanted tracked down. I have a thread on it in the Dyna forum. Othewise. I really do love the bike.

Can't answer on the backrest, not familiar enough with the solo seat and the fat bob.

For road trips, I try to bring only what I need. Extra pair of jeans, toiletries, sunblock, and something in case it gets cold. I always figure that I can pick something up while on the trip if I forgot it and it is that important.

Enjoy the trip, sounds like its going to be fun.

230 miles
4 hour trip
you are young, screw the backrest.

earplugs
sun block
clear glasses if you don't ride with a face shield
throw a full size can of fix-a-flat on your parents trike

I am 6'4" on a short day and mine fits me well. If I lost some weight the stock seat might be a little more comfy when riding longer distances.

Danm near exactly what I was gong to write. Don't under estimate the value of the sun block and ear plugs.

You don't need a backrest. Put a sissy bar on the back and get a small touring bag to sit on the pillion behind you...then you can lean back into it when you want and you won't have to ride with a backpack strapped to you. A backpack strapped to you can fatigue you pretty quick.

Keep covered (I'm an ATGATT proponent myself, but at least wear a long-sleeve shirt), stay hydrated, and have fun.

Just go. You will never remember everything but the things you forget that you really need, you will never forget again. Just do it and learn :-) That's part of the fun!!!

I'm sure there's a tool kit already on the trike. Its always good to have the basics to tighten things up out on the road..
Obviously a cell phone and way to charge it. Either on the bike, the hotel or at a place you stop to eat etc...
Bring sunglasses for on and off the bike + clears...
You are only going over night, have company and a lot of motorcycle shops and dealers between destinations. So there relay isn't much you "NEED" .
Do a little research and get acquainted with what's around on the way just in case you need to stop...
Like, a good restaurant, parts and service, dry socks or a pair of boots, I lost the soul of boot pretty far from home once.
Luckily I was right near the first "Tractor Supply " I had ever seen. Love that place.
Have a fun trip and be safe.
