I dropped my last girlfriend and had to throw her away for a new one. That worked out pretty well.

If you just have a brain bucket it doesn't matter.

If you have a real helmet, a short fall can damage it. If you've ever cut tile or drywall you understand how just a scratch can have major change in how an impact will make the material fail.

Helmets are made to fail in a controlled manner to absorb and dissipate energy. Even dropping a helmet can essentially ruin it. However you can have them checked and often even repaired for not a lot of money so it's not a given that they need to be tossed.

It's pretty much what I do all the time...and...does it really matter?

Hang it. Used to worry about someone stealing mine and would carry it with me when it was newer. That got old fast but I'm suprised I don't hear of more being stolen. I would never leave a $500 and up full face unattended. Think that might be too tempting

It was an issue in virginia but now that I'm in TX I'm see it far more often and I'm not really worried about it. Without the laws forcing helmet use the market just isn't there.

Why intentionally leave your helmet where it could get kicked, or bugs could crawl in it, or dogs could **** on it? Just seems like a bad idea.
No clues, never seen it done around here.

If you put it under the kickstand it will keep it from sinking into the hot asphalt. Done it many times my self. A fifty dollar helmet scratched from the asphalt is better then the bike tipping over.

They definitely don't want to lug it around and have to place it somewhere in a pub (vs. next to their bike), and I'd assume they lay it on the ground so it accidently doesn't get knocked off their bike, or is readily seen from a passing car where some punk kid would think it's cool to steal it.

With no law in place, not a plethora of helmets around.
