Default Rider / passenger comms

Bike: SGS 15. Stock
Helmets: both of us have Shark Evoline 3 that is full modular that flips right to the back as opposed to just half up in the air (great helmet by the way)

Now that she is on the back more and more and the fact that we have the 1st mini road trip in a few weeks down to the Austrian Lakes and Salzburg the OL said today that she wants to have comms whilst travelling. There goes my peace and quiet.
So he are my questions...
1. Most comms units seem to be a Bluetooth earpiece. Now I have a big round Charlie Brown shaped head and there is only about enough space for my head and my glasses in my xl helmet. Are there any smaller earpiece units?
2. In Lil' OL' Europe we don't have the speed restrictions you chaps have in the Colonies and so on motorways we are normally cruising around 75-80mph. Normal roads around 50mph. Is any boom mic just going to pick up road noise as opposed to conversation?
3. Are they constantly on or are they 'push to talk'? Don't mind the OL heavy breathing in my ear afer midnight but I don't want it for 4 hours on the bike!
4. As mentioned, we have modular helmets so it's not like we can have built in mics in teh chin guard.

All help gratefully received
(PS...also needs to be something we can get here in Lil' Ol' Europe)

Her's an FYI: Here in the "Colonies" we have speed limits all the way to 80 mph. Two lane highways can see 70 mph. (And we don't fight those pesky *****s no more either.)
Personally I'm not much interested in person to person electronic communicators.
My outlook goes like this: If I wanted to hear her talk we'd just take the car.
Tell her it's just not possible and she'll have to learn to be quiet until the next stop.

Thanks for sharing. But I have no choice in taking her with me.
You can do 80mph in the Colonies? Without someone in front of you waving a flag?
Dayum....confused me when I was there that there was speed restrictions state to state, changes at night, changes if its raining, changes if you are in a truck/towing a trailer / etc.

But appreciate the input

Default Communication Devices Here In the Colonies...

I have read most of your posts and it seems you love calling the United States the colonies...
Just to refresh your poor memory, we fought a war with England that started almost 250 years ago so that we would NOT be a colony. Are you still a colony of Russia ?
The best 2 way communication device I have used, beside an intercom, is the Sena SMH10. It has different kits that can clamp on to half, 3/4, or full face helmets. The mics are only hot when you speak and filter out most of the wind noise. They are Bluetooth so you can take and place phone calls while riding, if you choose, and listen to music on your phone, also if you choose. It will also link up to 4 other SMH10s for group rides.

Nice. Will have a look at that. Appreciate it.

As for comments on Lil' Ol' Europe, The Colonies, etc etc.....it's nothing more than humour (or humor as it is called in the 'Was a colony 250 years ago lands').
Advantage of going through military school at 16 with ginger hair and glasses is that I learnt not to take myself too seriously
And to my knowledge, England has never been a colony of Russia. Shame....their chicks are hot

I use the SENA SMH5 inside my Shark Evoline ST2 and it works awesome. The wife has a Bell Revolver with the Sena and we can communicate at all speeds, share music, take calls and listen to the GPS all off my phone. I went with SMH5 for budget reasons but if I have to do over I would go with the 10's. Check out Revzilla and there in depth vids and customer reviews on each of the products. http://www.revzilla.com/sena-bluetooth-communications

My wife and I have a very complicated communication code.

She gives me three pokes in the side when she wants me to stop.

She pats my stomach when she wants to eat.

She pinched my side when I go too fast.

And she punches me in the junk when I looked at a girl too long.

Maybe I should get comms too.

I have this helmet & installed the Boom com speakers/mic. To install the speakers I removed some of the styrofoam for the speakers to sit shallow enough to not interfere with putting on the helmet.

You can adjust the VOX to not pick up wind noise, I would say that compared to my full face, the Shark helmet does pick up a bit more wind noise. You could experiment with different mic covers that would probably work out really well.

Another plus for the Sena. I bought this "Sena SMH-A0304 Helmet Clamp Kit for Earbuds with Attachable Boom Microphone and Wired Microphone". I hated the feel of the normal hockey puck like speakers in my helmet, so this lets me wear ear buds. You can actually use the wired mic in a modular fullface helmet as well, so you don't have to worry about the boom mic. Just wire it up to where there's some slack for you to be able to open/close your helmet, but you won't be able to 180 it. I use the boom mic in my modular, my husband uses the wired in his modular. I use the boom on my 3/4 helmet as well. All works well. Fantastic lil thingies.

we have had the scala cardo G4 and wont go back to that brand... we are using the sena SMH 20, and love it, at 80MPH we get no wind interference and the sound is crystal clear... what everyone else said about the sena products are true and we can hook up to 9 units and if we want, it will connect to, up to 2 other brands like the scala or u-clear and many others...... the scala will not do that
