They replace the bleeder valve so you don't have to open push the peddle then close the valve. There is a ball check in them that prevents the air from getting sucked back into the line when you stop pressing the peddle. Open the speed bleeder, pump till no more air, then close it and you are done. Basically it's a one way valve that replaces the open or closed bleeder valve sort of like a check valve in a sump pump line that prevents the water from running back into the sump well.

Been dealing them for oh about 20 years now and I still use the rubber hose to keep the mess down that doesn't change. I've had them bad brand new and they can suck air depending on a few factors. Custom brake systems using them can be real touchy, about 1/2 the time I'll ditch the speed bleeders and go back to OEM.
