Question for all you experienced long haul riders regarding 5k service recommendations.
I currently am less then 2k away from my next scheduled service. Have a 4k trip planned in a couple weeks. What do you recommend as far as getting the service done as the 5k will be up mid trip? Should I get it done before I go and just not worry about it? Hate to leave miles on the fluids I have.. but may be best. Looking for some insights....
Your choice. Actually changed my fluids at 1k (dealer), 3k and 5k (me). Saved $100 off 5k svc by doing the fluids.
I would want a good safety check prior to a 4k trip (critical fasteners), etc. So, I would do the fluids myself, now. And, have the dealer do a 5k interval type svc before the trip. Just me. I actually did this prior to the TN HOG rally, but I was at 4800 mi.
You didn't say if you knew mc maintenance, but your question seems to reveal that you might depend on the dealer, at least thru warranty.
Are you talking about a bike that is under warranty (approaching your first 5K service?), or a bike with more miles on it, and it's just your next in a series of 5K services.
If you are in a warranty, you might want to be careful about exceeding the service interval by 2000 miles. If it was me, I'd do the service now or as close to your departure as possible.
Yes, bike is still under warranty.. this would be its 5k service. I had the service done at 1k. I am having the dealership do the service due the warranty.
I could have it done while we are en route... are the dealerships good at getting service done if you don't have an appointment and are on the road? I was told they are but not tried in the past to get service done as I always had it done before taking a longer trip.

Thanks for all your replies!
There ya go. Schedule an appointment where you think you will be so you hopefully do not have any down time, or at least shorten it.
The problem with getting the service done while on your trip is if they're running behind or have a problem (which is always my luck) your bike could be stuck there ALL day! I wouldn't plan any other activities for that day. JMO
