I'll apoligize before handfor the rambling but I am having a delima. I have an 05 1200C which is my first HD that I bought in Alaska. I have done and added a lot of nice goodies to it but now that I am back in Michigan and am getting with old friends who ride I am wondering if I should get a bigger bike, we are going to do a trip to the Florida Keys next summer and a trip out west the following. I received a call from a custom bike dealership here and they took in an 03 Heritage that has had a lot of custom work in on trade on a Bourget. The bike is a beauty and has 8000 miles on it. So if I would trade would I lose my shorts on the deal? They want 13,500 for the bike and it has all the maintenance records. I know it is a decision I need to make on my own but sometimes opinions help.
dude, i crossed the us on a honda 650 nighthawk. i liked the nimble handling of the bike, especially when the roads got twisty and it worked well on the freeway as it could hold a steady 90mph easily. granted, a sportster 1200 cant match the hp and handling of a nighthawk, but it should make it to 90 with no problems, and with a similar "standard" style riding position.

adding a small (_small!_) windscreen took the brunt of the wind off the torso, and still allowed me to see over it, made a huge difference in distance riding. add saddlebags and freeway pegs, and it was a comfortable ride with storage. piece of cake. and that was across the country the long way. going from north to south like you intend to should be easy on a sportster.

mind you, i like to smaller bikes. i think they handle better. maybe later in life ill want a rolling sofa, but if you're young enough to hang, try the ride with the sportster.

That's a good price for the bike. We have an 03 Heritage and it's sweeeeeeeeeeet. Really good on long rides.

The Heritage is a good bike for long rides, I have over 30,000 on my 03. Been out and back to Sturgis with it twice riding the Alcan the whole way. Don't know that I would want to do that with a sporty.

If you are going to ride 2 up she will want a wider pillion. The optional removable tourpack would be a good addition as well.

My other bike is a "road sofa" and 06 Ultra I have put 19,000 on so far.

While the price on the 03 is decent it will also depend on what they give you for the sporty.
