If your starter pinion "bangs" or hits hard whenever you hit that starter button, then you've got a compensator problem.
07's and 08's are famous for it.
You listen when people start their bikes and you can hear the difference as soon as they touch the starter button.
The funny part of this is that mine did it very obviously when it was brand new, but over the years the bang has went away. Maybe it just broke in and nothing was really wrong with it....................time will tell.
Mines clunking on shut down. Getting the Baker unit in a couple weeks. This is what puzzles me. My Brother has a Victory and it's a gear driven primary. Harley hasn't converted to this bullet proof set up because........

I always figured they didn't because the cases don't look as good. Look at the tranny case on an Indian our victory and they don't look as good but they sure perform better.
My '07 clunks when starting, I took it in for extended warranty and they said it was something else and replaced the "something else". Apparently it was something in the starter or whatever; the bill would have 2k if I didn't get the extended warranty. Still clunks when starting with 17k on the bike. Plan on taking it over to an Indy that left the Dealership when they changed owners since he didn't like the direction they were heading. He comes highly recommended, so here's to hoping. I'll look at the Baker you guys are talking about now. Older threads on here say that it's normal for '07-'08 to do it...not buying that though.
Thanks to all for the replys. Looks like a Baker Compensator is in my future. I like the way they did the oil channel. Agree about the glue in plastic oil channel looking like a stupid thing. I see that HD cast an oil channel into the outer primary cover on later model bikes. I also like the primary chain adjuster Baker has. I don't see the prices for either of these items. Does anyone know the price? Probably just have to call monday.
I have an '08 Heritage with 54,000 miles. I replaced the stock junk piece of **** compensator with a Screaming Eagle one at around 10,000 miles because of the regular BS of knocking/noise/vibration. It's been making noise and knocking and vibrating again for awhile now so, I'm looking at replacing it with the newest version with the glue in plastic oil channel that is supposed to be the fix all. Anyone have experience with this newest version?
Mark from Baker Drivetrain is a regular on this site ... He is knowledgeable and well versed as to why their product is a vast improvement.
I've been hearing about compensator problems with the 07's since I've owned one. Only recently, have I noticed the clunk when shutting down, and never have heard the "bang" on start up. I have 86,000 on it now, so I supposed you'd could say it was a pretty good device.
I've been riding Harleys since 1960. You get used to noises, so I don't get overly concerned until I hear a noise that says 'not normal for a Harley'.
The bike is in the shop right now for a new compensator, and maybe a tensioner too.
