Default resale values

theres been a few threads on here lately compairing resale values of HDs to metrics, instead of useing the kelly blue book value to compair, wouldnt it be more accurate to use the final selling prices on ebay? after all no matter what the book says, its only worth what you can get out of it.

Thats going to be difficult to gage since most listed on ebay don't sell because of the unrealistly high reserves. I can give you a pretty good guide on trade in values though, lot's lower then people think. I'm a sales manager at a car dealership and occasionally we get bikes on trade. Recently we had two HD's traded in and I called over 5 different dealers to get bids on the bikes. One was a 2004 Duece with only 820 miles. High bidder was $11,000 and that was only because of the low miles other wise it would of only brought 9 to 10 k. The other was a 2000 dyna defender with 7,000 miles. It brought a whopping $6,500.

and then that dealer will probably make a couple grand or so on the bike.

Get a black book. Try to buy as close to wholesale as possible.

If you can't get hold of a black book, then try to buy for nada or kbb trade value. You won't always be able to do so, but once in a blue moon you'll get lucky.

My experience is that you can get more out of it selling locally than on ebay. That makes sense. If I am going to buy a bike sight unseen and have to travel a considerable distance to pick it up, I am not going to pay as much.

oops.I think I missed the point. You're wanting to sell, not buy.

My experience is that, when I'm buying, then it'sa seller's market in my area. When I want to sell, then the local market is slow. Go figure.

The Blue Book is what dealers in Canada and the U.S. use (I have one sitting in front of me, but since it has Canadian prices, it won't do you much good), so if you're trying to figure out what you would get on trade, you would need this book. As far as which hold their value better, it's Harley, but not by much. About 8% more than metrics, on average.

tmd is right, ebay is not a good measurement of the value of bikes, but you also have a good point slinger, the dealer will consider the "what you can get out of it" factor. A good example is Victory, great bike, the Blue Book gives it a half decent resale, but the problem is, nobody wants them used (unless it's a Vegas). So we tend to offer about 3 grand less on trade, than what the book tells us.

The good and bad about buying on ebay---
The good is --- you can save alot of money (being the 2nd highest bidder)
The bad is --- if you win, you paid more than everyone else thought it was worth.

Blue book is a good gauge, but not particularly accurate for every area.
