Default Advice needed

Hello everyone. I'm finally in the running for a new bike... After having my first bike as a 94 Suzuki enduro... Then moving up to a Honda shadow 750... I feel confident enough to get a big bad Harley! The problem is, I have so many options and as with cars, there is a new school scene and an old school scene.

Basically I'm looking at two bikes and I was just wondering if anyone could vouch for either or both with positive and negatives.. I can post pictures of both later.

2009 HD Street Bob...

1999 HD Softail Fatboy...

Huge year difference, only reason because of that is I can get the Fatboy without taking a loan out. Also it only has 7500 miles on it with a lot of visual goodies. I've been doing some research and found that the Fatboy with the evo isn't very... Powerful? Thanks for your help....

I like the idea of not having to take out a loan and the Fatboy is a nice bike. The Evo is a great engine. You can do a lot with it.

We all have preferences as well as different riding needs.

Newer (IMHO) is almost always better and I prefer EFI over carbs.

While I like the looks of the Fatboy more, the Street Bob will have a lot less vibrations.

I've never owned (or ridden) a Fat Boy but I've owned five (still have one) Softails with the EVO pre-B version engines and my wife currently has a B model and there's a lot of difference in the rides.

If you don't do a lot of freeway speed driving this may not be an important issue and the Fat Boy would be a great machine.

Again, JMHO.

Get the Fat Boy for all the reasons mentioned above.

I would say I do more back road riding than anything, speeds vary. The rest is a mix between brief freeway to city riding. I like to take long trips on occasion. Thank you all for the replies. The only problem I see with the 99' is that in Wisconsin, even summer morning/night can be chilly and carbs don't like cold. Also on the vibration issue, how much are we talking? Any way of a remedy for it? Also the loan has the purpose of giving me credit (something I don't have).

The Evo Softails have solidly mounted engines with no counterbalancer. No real way to remedy that. As far as how bad it is, that depends more on the rider than anything else. Some people think it's not bad at all, while others on the same bike will freak out and think it's the end of the world. Sorry I can't be more specific than that.

The Dyna Street Bob has a rubber mounted engine. It will shake a lot when you're sitting at a light with the engine idling, but smooths right out when you're actually riding.

In 2000 Harley introduced a counterbalanced Twin Cam engine that they solidly mount in the Softails. It smoothed them out quite a bit.

Good Luck.

Only 7500 miles, EVO engine, and you can afford it without a loan, what is the question?

The EVO is a great engine, and a lot can be done easily/cheaply to bring it's power up a bit when you have the time and money.

It's a proven solid design that will provide years of service.

But it's your bike, therefore your choice.

Good luck and enjoy.
