This. But 30 minute rides? I can see you stretching that out, once you feel comfortable to 1-2 hours.

I've had back surgery and have three vertebrae that are bone on bone. I have no problem riding my Road King Classic. Longest rides are usually a couple of hours or so without a break but even then it doesn't bother my back. Don't know how other bikes would be, just my experience.

I have 3 bulging discs in my back. Heavier bikes can make for a smoother ride. Whichever you decide on add some good shocks to help smooth things out.

I got rid of the air shocks on my ultra and put on the Progressive 944s. Expensive, but made a big difference

I wrecked my back years ago. And as crazy as it sounds, Ape hangers and a soft seat with some back support go along way to allowing me to ride distance. Not having to hunch over to grab buckhorns or OEM bars makes a big difference. My apes are just at shoulder height and my back is relatively straight. I have had more than one person look at me like i am nuts having a bad back and riding with apes, but for me this is the only way i can do any amount of miles.

I guess it also depends on where in your back the pain is located. For me it's lumbar and lower. I tried riding with drag bars and buckhorns once and my back was screaming before i got to the end of the block. I would say sit on as many bikes as you can. Then imagine them with shoulder height apes. Sit back see what that feels like. Also never underestimate the power of a really comfy seat.
just my two cents.

Whatever bike you get, make sure it has a backrest!

I have a junkyard in my back, and am only able to ride an hour max.
It's still worth it to me to have a bike though, it's one of the few hobbies
I have that give me joy!
