A couple of suggestions FWIW:
- If you get up that far, the Gaspe' peninsula is beautiful, as is Cape Bretton Island, Nova Scotia.
- I agree that 95 from NY to MA is horrible; you might consider 84 if you are in a hurry-also keep in mind that Friday afternoon (and at time Thu evenings) are bad going north out of Boston towards Maine, as well as heading to the Cape...same deal the other way on Sundays.
- If you can Rt100 in VT is awesome, as is the kangamangus in NH.
- Actually, the HD Touring Handbook is pretty good highlighting good riding roads...
New York - Ride through Finger Lakes especially Letchworth State Park, Home of the Grand Canyon East #1 (Portageville, NY to Mt. Morris, NY), Rt. 5&20 East all the way to Rt. 12, 28, 30 & 3 North where it'll take you to Adirondack Mountains, Lake Placid (Home of the 19XX Olympics), Plattsburgh and ride on the ferry over Lake Champlain (Keep your eyes peeled wide open for Loch Ness Monster).
Vermont - Ride towards to VT100 and get on VT108 (No center stripe road) between Smuggler's Notch and Stowe Ski Resorts. Beautiful Landscaping while taking a break from riding.
New Hampshire - Read previous posts on Kamacagus Highway Rt. 112, Mount Washington and check out Weirs Beach/Laconia where they host Annual Bike Week in June. Lots of nice roads there.
Pennsylvania - Hop on Rt. 6 on your way home. Stop at Wellsboro Diner for lunch or dinner. Check out the other Grand Canyon of the East#2 not too far from Wellsboro. Nice roads, Nice view. (Check with Geezr Glider here as he can give you more POI's there).
There's a lot to see in this BIG loop I just suggested, but it's up to you and your better half whether to the whole or half of the trip.
But bypassing coastal north 1/2 of Connecticut, coastal Rhode Island, and coastal Massivetwoshits...you're missing a lot of classic New England culture.
Absolutely right on that. Another beautiful ride in NY is the Lake George region including Saratoga area.
My wife and I did a trip out to New Hampshire from the Detroit area in June went up to Laconia a week prior to the big rally stopped off at the HD dealer there a picked up a couple of T's and a hat.
Attached is the route we followed out to Crotched Mountain. We enjoyed just about every mile of the ride. Looks like you are heading a bit further South into NJ first, but here is our route to NH
All I can say is Michigan roads suck in comparison, most of the roads we were on in Upstate NY, NH, VT, CT were awesome, curvy, smooth and well maintained. Have a great ride and generate even better memories.
Personally I would be burning fewer miles and taking time to smell the roses, NH is absolutely beautiful with so many great little towns that just wreak history onto the main streets.
Make sure your rides take you off the roads before dark, lots of (4) legged critters out there.

Lots of great advice on the new England states. I ride NH, ME and VT all the time and have for decades. VT is a great riding state. Pick just about any road and enjoy.
If your heading into Montreal, Id suggest continuing on Highway 40 on the north side of the St. Lawrence, then cross back at Trois-riviers. Less traffic and better scenery plus if needed there is a HD dealer just south of the bridge. Ive been this way multiple times but its been a couple years since my last visit.
Going through RI I suggest you take Rt 1A (sometimes it's RT 1) along the coastline, it's a really nice, relaxing ride and easily accessible whether you're coming from CT (take the RI beaches exit) or from MA there are several ways to get there but there's plenty to see if you include Newport in your route. That's one of my favorite rides which I do weekly in the summer and it never gets old. In any event, unless you stop to eat, you'll be in RI for less than an hour. Have a safe trip.
The Kanc and Mt washington, Weirs beach areas of NH. Bentley's Saloon in Arundel, Maine for an awesome two-lobster dinner for like $20, then down to the coast for The Marginal WAy...
