I don't believe anyone mentioned that when you come up behind someone and you decide not to pass, stay in his/her mirror. If I'm caught by someone (rarely happens) I appreciate knowing I can count on them to be where I can see them. I think this is important anytime you are riding with others staggered formation.

I had this happen a couple of weeks ago. Guy on a Road King gets caught behind a truck. I slowed to let him over and when he passed the truck I fell in behind him. Rode about 6 miles like that and when he exited the freeway he gave me a wave and a nod. Nice!

I've had it go the other way too. Me on my bagger and my daughter on her Sporty....caught up with a group of 6 on the way to Rolling Thunder. They kept looking back at us like we'd crashed their party. I'm not a mind reader and not sure what they were thinking, but I felt about as welcomed as a muddy dog at a church wedding, so we passed and went on our way.

On a highway, it's much safer to ride in pairs. So, I have no problem with someone falling in behind me or vise versa. It happens quite often. I don't want the dude riding right next to me or pulling up beside me at a stop light, etc. But on the highway, just fall into group ride formation and be thankful that there's someone else out there with you making it safer.
