What do you think is the best time of year to ride in Maine? We are thinking our next trip might be in that direction.

Mid September to early October is the absolute best time to ride New England in my book. Comfortable temperatures, summer crowds have gone home (you'll start to get leaf peepers in October though), not too many wet leaves all over the road yet, and nightfall is still reasonably late. Most of the new pavement had been laid for the year, and winter hasn't wrecked it yet.
We did a lot of highway but when we left upper Maine we went Rt. 1 to Rt. 11. The highway in upper Maine has a 75 speed limit with very little traffic. You can cruise for miles at 90 with couple times at 100+. We were watching for moose and the only animal we had to hit the breaks for was a cat on the highway.
I was told that in Maine there are two seasons, Winter and July. The post thaw "mud" really sucks up there but it's a beautiful place to rode no doubt. Look out for the logging trucks especially the ones with Canadian license plates.

Ever see what those trucks do to moose when they hit 'em?
One time many years ago, a whole gaggle of us were heading way up towards the northern bulb of Maine for a camping 'n white water rafting journey (that's a whole 'nother crazy story). Some long *** stretch of highway going through flat scrub growth marsh areas....totally flat, straight highway...exits seemed like they were 20 and 50 and 50 miles 'tween 'em.
Anyways...I'd see an explosion of dark red in the pavement..and a leg..and a few hundred feet down a side of ribs, a hip, and another hundred feet down..a neck...perhaps a head, few more legs way off on the wide.
...now I'm used to seeing deer kills on the highway..when a car hits them. Deer usually intact..sometimes torn a little bit. But I see these parts of huge *** moose spread all over and down the road for a great distance..I'm like.."WTF happens to these? Get hit by some 105mm HE round from an M-1 Abrams?
......then a loggin' truck comes from the opposite direction..and I see this big beefy welded steel girder frame around the front end...like a big cow plow...all sorts of welded steel beams. And the truck is fully loaded and barreling down the highway doing a solid 90 if not better. And it hit me..the lightbulb lit up bright in my head..."These logger truck ****'s...they're just slamming into the big march cow mooses doing 90 with all that steel girder up front..all the weight of the logs on the trailer..momentum and mass baby...momentum and mass!" The moose don't stand a chance!
Hey, hey,hey.. Wait just a minute. We have had 3 of those IN A ROW this week...
haha, I hope you get a few more this year. Maine IS beautiful, and I did exaggerate about the one day, but the summer is a bit on the short side. Used to ride up around Rangeley and Sugarloaf once in awhile when doing a trip to Laconia waaaay back in the day.
Was up there 2 weeks ago. Somewhat hot in Rochester, NY in the morning and got to Old Orchard Beach in the afternoon. Awesome weather by collecting all the breeze off the ocean. Temp. was in the mid 80's, but doesn't feel like it. Drove on Route 1 all the way up to Bar Harbor. Beautiful and Scenic views everywhere.
For those who want to check out something unique up there. Visit Maine State Prison showroom. Prisoners carving wood out of just about anything you could think of. Well, This one is different. They carved the whole chopper with David Mann and a lady behind. Just awesome and unreal. I took several pixs where the warden walked into my face and said, "No pictures allowed."
Had a great time up there. Only saw 15 minutes of rain as the weather was gorgeous the whole time.
Seen the magnificent views of Mt. Battie at Camden State Park and Cadillac Mountain at Acadia National Park. Anyone who have doubts...Don't. Just go !!!.
Drove through and stayed in Bath about 3 weeks ago on the way up to NB Canada and the stayed in Saco on the way back.
Nice areas and very similar to New Brunswick Canada where I am from....
