I'm planning on a southern Utah trip after Thanksgiving, no heated gear just chaps with thinsulate liners or my Carhart Goretex over pants leather jacket over fleece or hivis goretex bomber work jacket topped off with neck gaiter and modular helmet.
I'll decide which depending on the forecast.
One things for certain, The passes are pretty much off the table for me. I've been watching news footage for a couple weeks showing how the snows piling up in the high country and i can see the snow line from my house at about 9500'.

We made a two day ride through western NC into Tenn. down to Chattanooga. I rode year round for years without heated gear but now have the works, including heated riding pants. Hate putting everything on but sure is worth it leaving out in the mornings in single digits or coming home after dark in the mountains in the teens. I could ride without it and be cold but that doesn't make sense anymore.

A side note. Picked up a razor in the rear tire last night about 20 miles out of Chattanooga. Barry, the owner of a mower shop helped us all he could, then let me leave the bike in his place overnite, then met the guy towing it this morning. He wouldn't take a cent for his troubles. Then the guys at dealership in Chattanooga got it straight in and manager said they were having a sale soon and went ahead and installed a new tire with no labor. It sure turned around a bad situation for me. Thanks to all those guys. (Sorry, can't find how to start a thread)

I set my limit at 33. No bugs, bike runs better and don't have to wave much.

My perspective of cold isn't so much the cold as the ice that can come with it. We had rain the other night and it dropped cold enough that ice formed. I didn't think it would get that cold overnight as I got home after 9 with a little rain -- but by 8 the next morning we had ice -- glad I wasn't on the bike -- I would have been down several times. As it was the truck slipped several times.

Last year we didn't get any rain so to speak and I road in 27 degree weather -- since I felt confident there would be no ice. However that is not always true as we had no rain in through October a few years ago and the weather had been warm -- but there was one spot I know where several riders went down.

Rode to work this morning, 28 degrees, and loved almost every mile of it, had to take it easy in a couple of ares where the road looked like it had frost on it. It will be in the mid 30s the next couple of days, I am not giving up yet.

50 is cold? haha I'm still wearing a tshirt outside and my mesh jacket on the bike.

Then there's that funny white stuff that keeps coming back year after year.
