I think a good in between is the Truck-Lite, I see them for around 200. I would have no concerns running them, our trucks in Afghanistan ran the 7 inchers for headlights and never really gave too many problems.
Oh heck, they are now only $163 delivered on Ebay!
I installed these same ones on my 08CVO Roadking. Both headlight and passing lamps. The fit is perfect, the headlight came with a canbus adapter so it was plug and play. Spliced the passing lamps into the existing wires. Took less than an hour to install. 100 times brighter than the stock lighting I had. Brilliant white light, run very cool and night time riding is better than I could have ever imagined. paid about $375 for all 3. Very happy camper.
I put a HD Daymaker Reflector light in my SG a while ago and I love the light it throws. Clean, bright, and a nice smooth pattern with no dead spots. But that's my long-distance bike and it gets a lot more night hours than my SB. I hated the idea of dropping that kind of coin on the SB but the stock light just plain sucked. Sucked bad. Especially compared to the Daymaker on my other bike. So I compromised and put the Amazon Eagle 5 3/4 LED light in this one. Simple plug-and-play install, works fine, but haven't been able to take it out on any night rides yet due to non-stop rain...and obviously I can't comment on the reliability or durability yet...but for half the price of the HD unit, I'll give it a chance. I figure the odds of all 4 LEDs going out at the same time is pretty slim...
Personally I'm glad to see so many other manufactures producing these awesome LED headlights. JW Speakers (sold by HD) will have to lower their absurd prices to become more competitive with the changing market. Sure it's a great light, especially the latest generation. But those prices are insane!
I've installed the Phase 7 Truck-Lite into three of my bikes and have been running them for the past 3 years with no issues. In fact I've changed the headlight buckets from 5.75" to 7" on all three bikes as well. Well worth it IMO.
I went with the JW Speaker headlight. Purchased through an automotive parts distributor, it was about half the price that Harley sells the daymaker for. The only additional change that had to be made was the mounting ring because the original, for the incandescent light, is too shallow.
I'd always favor a sealed unit over a LED bulb mounted into a random reflector. Until you mount it, you have no idea of what the outcome will be. Sealed units are made with deliberate focus of their beam or projection. Other sealed units like Truck-Lite have cut-offs, which keep from blinding oncoming traffic. It's also vitally important to have proper aim adjusted.
If somebody spent the time to test various LED bulbs into various reflectors, I'm sure certain combinations could be successful. However, many more would fail dramatically. LED bulbs are extremely bright and unless that light is correctly contained, it could create a serious hazard as to blinding oncoming traffic.
That wouldn't be as much of a concern during daylight hours, but could easily be fatal at night.
