That was a very interesting write up in AIM about the true costs in states with mandatory helmet laws. lt clearly showed the falsehood of the medical cost for injuries without a helmet. In those states medical costs for cars where higher that for motorcycles.
It also disproved the myth that death is more likely without a helmet. What kills most of the 40 plus aged riders (59% of fatalities) is speed, alcohol and going in to a corner and locking the rear brake.
Are figures kept for helmetless riders that 'only' receive a brain injury and are incapacitated for the rest of their lives? IMO deaths are irrelevant.
Or are figures kept about the number of riders that are involved in a minor incident, minor at least because a helmet prevented a head injury, and ride, or at least walk, away?
'Free choice' is great. Unfortunately that choice can have unexpected results.

Hardly unexpected. If I ride without a helmet, I expect that if I go down, and if I hit my head, I'll probably die or suffer a permanent brain injury. It's no one else's business if I choose to accept that risk.
