I have a 1961 Servi-Car and wanting to restore as close to original as possible. All family "stories" point it to being an old police model that was owned by the San Francisco Police Department. However after pulling the motor and tearing it down the shop I have helping me with it said the bike could have been military surplus because the cases are painted OD green. There is a pobbibility that it could have been a Military Police Model which would make since as the Presidio in SF was a major port/processing center back then. This in turn would change some of the coloring on the motor along with the overall painting of the entire bike. Could anyone point me in the direction of a way to find out or trace the VIN on it? Google points me to San Francisco but that is about as far as it gets me.
Go to http://www.caimag.com, log in introduce yourself and post up the info there. The forum is dedicated to old iron. Lotsa folks will point you in the right direction.
Nice looking as it sits. Also do yourself a big favor. Get a copy of Bruce Palmers 2 volume book on Restoring HDs. It is the 2nd edition that you want. It is considered "the bible' for restoring 1937-1964 motorcycles. Here is the email address for his wife, Debbie. She handless all the orders. www.dppublications@verizon.net
The book is very detailed and specific on paints, parts and finish of every piece of sheetmetal as well as every nut and bolt.
If the motor is a correct service-car for your year the vin number (located on the left case just about the timing hole inspection plug) should start with 61 G and then followed by the production numbers.

Thanks for the reply!! I have a copy of that publication which has given me a lot. There is a small section about servi-cars. The VIN is 61 G 1221..... Which tells me its a 1961 Servi-car and number production 1221.
