Motorcycles definitely have their benefits. But skirting having to pay for parking isn't one of them in my view. Bypassing a gate is tantamount to stealing in my opinion. Just not the right thing to do. As was mentioned above, doing such only serves to give the folks in vehicles yet another reason to slam us. Motocyclists are always making efforts to be 'on par' with the rest of the folks out there on the roadways. Stating that they have just as much right to the roads (which we do) as do their vehicular counterparts. Knowingly not paying for parking (amongst many other things), in my opinion, only serves to weaken that goal.
Completely agree. For the few bucks it costs to park, I'd just as soon pay it and not look like I'm trying to steal anything.

Let's be hones, a bike takes up a lot less space than a car
I know you said you always park in a place that a car won't fit but for those that skirt and still park in a spot,a parking spot is lost... regardless if it's a car or a bike.

Agreed---and that would be wrong.

You missed the point -- I don't typically go into lots/garages; if I do, I always expect to pay. I talking about various small spots on streets, alleys, etc. where you can *safely* park a bicycle or motorcycle, but nothing else. It helps commerce and frees-up the stalls/spaces for those that need them. The city planners around here, however, see only an increased revenue stream from $20+ tickets.

If your not taking a parking space then why are you in the parking garage at all? It is a parking space. Even if you park where cars cannot, it is a parking space.

If a car has to pay then I pay. I also don't park where a car can't or isn't supposed to park. Nothing pisses off non-riders more than bikers skirting the motor vehicle laws. I want to send a positive message by playing by the rules. I wear CMA colors (as does my bike) and don't wish to reflect negatively on them or Christ.

I try to avoid downtown like the plague, but prefer self-park to valet. Yes, I actually get valet's trying to get me off my bike for them to park it! No way, Jose!

TX: Sometimes they don't charge bikes. Also, what if you don't take up a parking space? Does that change anything? Most times I put my bike in an area that a car cannot fit.
Okay, for those who don't charge bikes - So be it. That's a garage/lot policy to which one would be in compliance and/or following suit in not having to pay anything. Different story as opposed to bypassing a gate or otherwise taking up a space solely because a car couldn't fit in it, et al.

As to whether or not one doesn't take up a parking space? Does that change anything? Well, In my opinion, no it does not. Reason being, that decision (whetherone isjustified in not having to pay solely because they didn't take up a spot) is not ours (the motorcyclists) to make. It's that of the owners of the parking garage/lot to make. The owner of a parking garage/lot can charge whomever whatever he so chooses. Just because there is space that would otherwise go unused by a car does not make it free reign for a motorcycle to take hold of free of charge. At least, not in my view.

It doesn't matter whether a car could fit in the space or not. You are paying to use the owner's property (rent). If he chooses not to charge you that's cool. But in the absence of that policy it's his property and if you don't want to pay then don't park there. It isn't any more complicated than that.

Maybe they should make the gate longer then!

In the six story parkade that I am responsible for maintaning, bikes and cars are treated the same.
Ifany vehicle leaves without paying, the owner get a $100 bill fine in the mail.
Daily parking only cost $5.
Lots of motorcycles caught on video.
