riding behind a fairing helps a lot. I also wear insulated Carolina boots with my gerbing heated jacket and gloves. Most of the time a tuuk under the helmet is all I need. I am good until about 35 and or salt on the roads.
I agree about the fairing and even a windshield. In a perfect world I would have three bikes lol...one for hot laps around the neighborhood, a cruiser for Friday night with the boys and a full dresser for long trips. Since I'm stuck with reality, think I'll buy some flannel lined jeans and get over my pickiness with the looks of a windshield (I have a quick release one, just don't use it much).
North Muskegon--nice--I agree, I think it's going to be comfortable warm within the next month hopefully
I don't ride on the road in the cold months here. I've done enough racing on cold rainy days to know better then to torture myself. Plus we get a ton of salt and sand put down on the roads to deal with the snow.
With that said I found the key to staying warm at least in ice riding and trail riding in the winter is keeping the wind off you. You can go relatively light if you can keep the wind from reaching your body. Leather itself is bad at that. Of course heated grips are key too.
I'm spoiled since discovering the wonders of heated gear. I carry my heated jacket year round. Anything less than 60° and it goes on. Nothing like arriving to your destination feeling nice and warm. Heated gloves and heated jacket with a full face helmet. For lower I wear long Johns if I know it will be constant cold ride and I wear my rain pants over my jeans to cut the cold and wind out. Lower fairings take care of the rest. Wool socks are a must.
I've been getting out in the low 20's-30's over the past number of weeks. Underarmour 4.0 baselayer pants/shirt underneath heated jacket liner/gloves 2 pairs of sox, full face helmet. All this makes me comfortable and warm. Nothing worse than freezing on a bike. Been there, done that!
I never used to ride when it was below freezing. Now I ride when it's in the lower 20's in the morning knowing it'll warm up later in the day (maybe up to 30°)
What gets me is the people that say I must be crazy to ride when it's that cold. Then those same people ride a snowmobile when it's 0°. Just dress for the weather. If it's crazy to have to wear a snowmobile suite on a cycle, why is it not crazy to wear a snowmobile suite on a snowmobile?
