I recently purchased the Vance and Hines Super Radius exhaust system for my 2016 Road Glide. I'm not sure what type of tuning I want to go with yet. How crucial is it that I get it flashed/tuned before riding? In the past, my bikes already came with exhaust and I never thought too much of what the previous owner had done.
Its not crucial. A lot of people change their exhaust and ride 10s of thousands of miles with no issues. You will be fine until you decide what tuner to get.
No you won't need anything for just the exhaust.
Here's the gig;
Air flow on factory bikes is limited by both the air filterand exhaust, the air/fuel ratio the ECM allows is set for required EPA values.
This is one of the first things folks change and is referred to as a Stage 1 upgrade.
You can change the Air filter or the Exhaust and no change to the ECM's AFR is needed because the air flow is still restricted by the other component.
It's when you change both filter and exhaust to more free flowing systems that something should be done to adjust the AFR.
I have put V & H slash cut slip on's and the bike runs fine. I would like to down the road put the FP3 tuner on it. I think it would run a lot better with that being done.
