Hey Folks, been looking through the forums and have found some answers to some of my questions without calling the HD Shop. I've owned bikes all my life and this is the first Harley. Man they are proud of them. Bought off the showroom floor week before last and am at about 250 miles on it. It is a 2016 FXDL. So, a concern of mine was with the bike having an ECM upon cold starts I noticed black smoke coming from the tail pipe after about 30 seconds of letting it warm and giving it a slight rev. I understand that this is normal as the ECM chokes it a little till it warms up. I also noticed the the pipes coming from the heads are cherry red after about a minute of idling. I hope this is normal as well. When I first start out I may get what I hear is a little backfire through the breather. Again, this smooths out as well. I hope all this is normal for a NEW bike, wouldn't want to do any damage to it before it/s time for her first oil change. Nice forum here, hope to learn tons! Thanks
Is the engine stock or did you have some upgrades done to the exhaust, A/C, ect? If it is totally stock it is choked for air from the factory and starving to breath normally and you have a crappy catalytic converter that isn't helping in the factory headers.

Welcome from NorCal & congrats on your '16'. Is your exhaust stock? If you have open exhaust (w/o cat) a tuner is needed. I'd have the dealership check out your issue with the cherry red pipes.
OK that is part of it, you are going to get a lot of advice here but the way I would go is 2 into 1, Vance and Hines, Bassani, or Thunderheader. Power Commander 5 and some type of round AC. Don't let Harley talk you into all of that Screaming Eagle bullshit JMHO, I just rebuilt a bike with a friend and went from some cheesy slip ons to a 2 into 1 V and H full exhaust, pre programmed Power Commander 5 from Fuel Moto and a Kuryakyn Maverick AC and it went from being a gutless turd to a bad *** bike. Point is do a lot of research before you let the dealer talk you into anything. There is lots of good advise here.
