In regards to the price of the gas can in question, there are some things you simply don't want to "go cheap" when purchasing. (Parachutes and bullet-proof vests come to mind.) If I planned on carrying a potential fire-bomb in my saddlebags I'd want to get one that is designed to take abuse such as vehicular side impacts, or after sliding along the pavement for 100 feet. But that's just me.
Thanks for the response but similar to 2AMGuy's response yours doesn't answer my question of what makes the Reda gas can worth $30.

Your examples about parachutes and bullet-proof vests are valid examples of what standards the can should be built with, but doesn't provide any details of the can itself.

I'm looking for first hand knowledge not opinions on what to do not to need it.

The shape and the claim that it provides a complete seal to keep fumes out of the saddlebag are what the price is based on. For me, it's not worth it because it does not keep the smell out for reasons I described in my first post.

Sometimes on long trips, but never totally full. I only put about 3/4gal in, then collapse the sides of the can before putting the
cap/spout on. Next put the can inside a plastic garbage bag(just incase), no leaks, no smell.

No competition, lawyers fees, demand, insurance, cost to produce, low sales volume ... etc.

Just guessing but the very first can probably cost $150K(or more) to produce.

Clint's link is good - Rotopax is the de-facto standard for off-road fuel containers; most of the 4-wheeler community uses them for all fuel cartage.

Just like bluraven's original question (about the Reda's $30 cost) - what makes the Rotopax worth $59? ( and that's just for the 1-gallon size.... ! )

Quality? Sturdiness? both should be requirements for carrying flammable liquids on a cage-less vehicle. IMHO, of course.

Hope this helps,
John

I remember reading a thread ( on here ) last year regarding a member who had his bike burn to the ground while using one of these ( similar? ) containers. No thanks.

Thanks all for your opinions on what makes this can worth $30.
As HotRod described I imagine along with "made in the USA", R&D, and liability cost is probably the biggest makeup of the $30.

I personally don't see anything unique about it other than the shape.
However perhaps that makes it to some worth $17.50 more than an upright Walmart purchased 1 gallon can.

All that being said, I think I'll just will keep my eye on the gauge and stop every 2-3 hours and fill up.

I have one, and as stated works well to hold gas until you want to use it. Can never get the spout to work without spillage. And after that there is no keeping the gas smell out of the saddlebag.

But I will give it props for the shape/space usage. Doesn't use up much space at all, and until I used it, never had any gas smell in the bag either.

On a side note TRUFUEL has a 4 cycle 32 ounce can of fuel that costs about $6 USA.
It is rather expensive for gas since it = about $24 USA per gallon but someone could test their need for emergency gas for the $6
That is 0.25 gallons and should get someone about 10 to 15 miles if they ride slowly and conservatively.

I have a Reda gas can. It is gas tight and fits my saddlebag nicely. I carry it when one of my friends with a limited 140 mile range rides with us. We have made gas stations every time, but he has been on fumes several times. We are both glad I carry the can when he rides with us. I have heard the spout is lousy. But it works and the can is gas tight so it works for me. I do not carry it on my own trips or on trips with other touring (200 mile +) motorcycles.
