My gate opener mounts after I do, while I hold the bike upright and the bars straight but she sometimes complains about opening the gate...lol
Maybe one of those waterproof tank magnet mount cases or handlebar mounted cases for a mp3 player or small cell phone? If it's small enough, I have seen them fastened on a key ring and clipped to belt loop like keys.

I got mine at a Dealership though I don't believe they make them any longer so the internet might be the only place. It has a magnet in it and mine sticks to the triple tree area behind the windshield on my Fatboy, it used to stick on the detachable windshield hardware on my Heritage. I can't find anywhere for it on my Springer so it goes in the windshield bag. Anyway, even in torrential Florida downpours it has never gotten wet inside. My garage clicker stays in there. It would probably stay on the tank but I've never trusted it to try it.
A assume your gate opener is a clicker similar to a garage door opener. If so there are several threads that I have seen here where folks have mounted their garage door opener guts under the seat with a remote button on the frame.
Here is a company that makes openers specifically for bikes not sure if they would be compatible for your opener but may be worth looking into http://www.mo-door.com/index.html
