might sound wrong to some of ya......after installing mini apes on my ride a few months back, I feel like I have more control....I absolutly love the way it feels compared to the stock bars that were on it.
just sayin...
I find the biggest difference to be how you turn the bike in the twistys. With drag bars you can push on the handlebar to turn but with the ape hangers you have to lean into it more. (I know that was a terrible description but it is early)
Personally, I love the apes and I have no problems keeping up with other riders in the mountains.
I recently took a trip to the lake here on the Tex/La border and its nothing but twisty turns for miles. My 16's posed no threat while I going through at good speed
Everyday at work I hear it.."how do you ride with hands way above your head?", "That just looks uncomfortable!" "You ruined your bike with those bars" BLAH BLAH BLAH. To each his own!

It doesn't sound wrong to me at all. I second it. I love how my bike handles with the mini apes and we have plenty of twisties out here in Wash.
I've got 10" chubby's, - slightly taller than stock - I push my bike pretty hard. They steer just like anyother bike going through the curves... its all just counter steering anyway

Now that's the truth right there! With proper counter-steering, why should there be any difference at all? Comfort should be the only issue.
I find myself leaning a lot more than I used to. The bike just seems to float wherever I want it to! It's like riding on a cloud of air, and my arms and back are so comfortable. I'll never go back!! So I gotta ask: "Where does all this misconception and hatred for Apes come from?" I really am being serious!! I dont understand it?? [][]

I'd rather ride aH-D with Apes thru the twisties that has conservative Rake and trail measurments than a bike with Drags barsthat has a hell of a lot rake and negative trail in the twisties.

my guess - common human nature to criticize/fear what we do not know. I have 16" chubb's on my wide glide and ride it like I was sitting in a recliner. will never go back!
