thanks for the replies everyone...I guess I was just wondering if there are a lot of people that have been riding for years and never had an incident...kind of sounds like everyone has had something happen...I have had my share of car accidents and know people with brain injuries from falling on the sidewalk and skiing. I just want to know it's possible to ride for years and never get a scratch...hoping someone will pipe in and say that! lol! I haven't worn a helmet yet, I love the air blowing in my face and the freedom...but with a 12 and 9 year old, I better look into it...
Obviously, there are no guarantees. Riding requires close attention all the time and the margin for error is much smaller than driving a cage. I believe that, if you're on your "A" game all the time, you can ride safely forever with one caveat-you can't control all the other morons on the road. My biggest fear is being rear ended at a stop. Welcome and enjoy the ride!
58 now..been riding since I was 10 .....mini bikes, dirt bikes.......road bikes.....mostly foreign stuff.....this is my first Harley......NEVER been down on the street........great riding but the biggest thing you have to control is that you are NOT invincible and that ANYTHING can happen......
Few years ago riding behind a few pick up trucks saw one two in front of me jack em up......laid on the brakes front and rear......rear went WAY too low......knew that I was gonna rear end the one in front of me......saw the ditch to the right and went for it........went right around the whole thing.......and he DID hit the one in front of him.....my rear brake master decided to not work anymore....rebuilt and it was fine for a few thousand more miles.....
So.....moral........have an exit........keep your eyes on a swivel and know whats behind you and WAY in front........GOOD LUCK!!
Motorcycle stats are funny--it really comes down to how you ride. Riding safe and being cognizant of the surroundings is very different than riding aggressively. Unfortunately it all gets clumped into one batch of statistics. I'm sure you can spend months watching youtube fails of people being dumb on two wheels.
Two thoughts, who cares what other people think. Buy the scoot and go and have fun. You can "what if" anything until the cows come home and it's a complete waste of time.
Been riding on the street since I was 16, I'm 58 now..... never been down. Sure it can happen tomorrow, but oddsmakers would have to say I have a pretty good chance of making it to the dirt nap in one piece.

Everyone who rides does not crash, just like everyone isn't going to drop their bike. That said, crashes do happen. Best advice I can offer is to take at least the MSF beginners course, if not more, and learn to ride defensively. You can mitigate things to a degree, by learning how to read traffic, etc. But there is always risk, if it gets into your head too much, you'll stop enjoying your rides.
Yes there are folks out there that have never crashed. Then there are those that have had crashes from mild to severe. I've had my MC license since I was 15, I'm 60 now. Yes I have bit the dust and it hurt like hell. But that was entirely on me. That's the risk we take when we throw a leg over the saddle. I know it and accept it. These days you have to have your head on a swivel and in the game fully. So many of the cagers out there are distracted, or even don't give a damn. You have to be very aware of your surroundings and ride like every SOB out there is out to kill you. Do that and you have a good chance of avoiding a crash. Don't do it and your number will come up sooner than later.
A massive percentage of motorcycle crashes with serious injury are related to drinking and/or excessive speed. Whether you do either of those things is entirely under your own control, so you can reduce your chances if you like.
Wearing a helmet and other protective gear also impacts how severe many accidents are. That is entirely in your control, and you can reduce your chance of serious injury if you like.
Controlling for those extra risks can mitigate a lot of the general stats you see.
