Default Fall Gear

For the folks who live where the seasons change...Whats your favorite cool weather riding gear? Not winter gear, but you know those cool nights when summer is starting to sizzle away!

The leather coat I took the liner out of,, only with the liner put back in.

All BS aside, it's a dance. The key is to be prepared with layers like any cold/cool weather seasons.
It can be 35-40 degrees in the morning, 70-75 in the afternoon then drop again near sunset.
Long sleeve shirt with a hoody and vest, sweatshirt and vest, full sleeve coat with liner,,
All of these components can be mixed and matched throughout the day.
Saddlebags come in handy.

Tshirt. Flannel. Denim vest.

If it gets warmer in the afternoon I can shed the flannel and strap it to my bars.

I change from the Harley mesh jacket to the Hein Gerike touring leather, it's lighter than the winter jacket, but still pretty warm. Full face helmet, always. Same Held gloves. It can surprise you at night up here at 4000 - 5000 feet, so I keep the electric vest in the saddlebag and I have the heated grips.

Leather gloves. Your hands are out there in the wind and if you have any gray or white hair, you know that means pain and decrease movement, control, and sensitivity in the cold. A blue jean jacket is good on a cool night. It allows enough air to pass to where you aren't hot but stops enough air to prevent you from getting cold in mild temperatures. A shirt skeeve t-shirt is a good idea under the jacket that way when it warms up, you can remove enough to compensate for the warmer temperature. Saddlebags come in handy during the fluctuating days. If you don't have saddlebags, a backpack attached to your sissy bar will also work.

A quick detach windshield is also handy.

I'll put the liner back in my jacket but the best fall gear I have this year is the heated grips on my new Ultra Limited.

I know it looks funky but I wear my hi-vis rain suit. On cool mornings it's a SS tee shirt, sweatshirt and rain suit all closed up. When it gets warm the rain suit goes back in the saddlebag, where it stays all the time. If the mornings are really cold, I wear thermals, wool sweater and a Harley battery operated heated vest under the rain suit. With gloves and a neoprene mask I'm good to go all the way down to freezing.

The only problem is you really need to take off the inner layers first.

I use the same gear for fall as I do for spring and summer.

A proper base layer will not only keep one cool in the summer but warm in the cooler temperatures.

I'm sure you'll get some great opinions here but if I were to say just one thing it would be the option to layer. This has always been a key for me. Specifically this time of year I like a tee shirt, short or long sleeve. I carry a sweat shirt and a denim jacket so I can add as necessary. Having the trike gives me a couple of storage options so taking a couple of extra layers is no big deal. The leather jacket liner doesn't usually get put back until later in the year unless we have a really unusual cold snap in October.

Layers for sure. The heated grips are great for when there is a slight cooling and you feel you may need to put on a jacket. I guess warming the blood in your hands makes you feel warmer all over.

Chaps are great for cutting down the wind, which robs heat from your legs. I have a heated vest and a heated belt which I will put in the bike this time of year. I also have fabric glove liners because leather is not a great insulator on its own.

Not really worried about the cold just yet though. It will be 90 degrees here this afternoon and with the humidity it will feel like 108. Heat warnings have been issued.
