I have had it on my mind for sometime the idea of starting a motorcycle salvage yard. I was in the auto salvage business for over 20 years. So the question is
1. Is their any interest is buying used parts
Just kicking it around watching sales to get a idea of what salvage bikes are bringing.
Interesting idea, it seems with the older bikes a used part may be the only source of OEM parts. The newer bikes not so much as parts are readily available, and for the most part, people that buy newer bikes regularly, do not wrench on their own bikes. If it was set up correctly, perhaps through internet sales to reach a wider market it may be lucrative. My $.02.
Are you sitting on a half mill for start up?
As mentioned the best market is older/obsolete parts and you need inventory to do that. Current markets are insurance salvage and a simple google search of "Salvage Harley" will show you what's already out there and how they sell. Most are complete bikes that are lay-down or front end damage ,, then folks have to jump through the salvage title hoops.
Am I going to buy a used starter for my 09 Dyna or a a single cylinder? Doubt it,,
We have the classifieds here and Ebay or Craigslist. (stiff competition)
Great idea,, too bad you didn't start 20yrs ago to have on hand those hard to find items.
I would buy, especially online. Do you know how impossible it is to find a cruise control module for my 07 road King?? But someone is gonna wreck one at some point (God forbid, not that I wish it on anyone) and I'd love to pick one up if someone doesn't need it or want it.
Find another dream to pursue , this ones been beaten to death and the bigger players have it locked down. All you'll end up with is a lot of rusting imports on land or in sheds you'll be paying rent & taxes on. I made a living for a couple years hustling used bikes and parts around the country in the 80's the bigger money organizations were already muscling out guys like me back then.
Bob Henig, owner of Bob's BMW, started with used parts from BMW's way back in the late 70's/early 80's. He and his wife now own one of the the largest BMW dealerships in the country. Amazing success story. www.bobsbmw.com
