Default Scraped pipe

I finally got my new Street Bob this week. It is my first Harley and I absolutely love it. It rides like a dream and has opened my eyes to how comfortable and natural motorcycle can feel.

That said, I am worried that I have developed bad habits that do not work well with the new bike. Just short of 150 miles on the thing, I turned more than a 90 degree right at a traffic light and heard the stock muffler (tapered, bullet style) scrape the pavement. I never felt the rubber footpeg hit as it ground down immediately.

My buddy (owns a Road King) says that he has never heard of someone scraping their Harley pipe. This makes me think that I must be doing something wrong. He also suggested purchasing pegs with metal pavement contacts so that I can get more feedback while learning the ropes.

My previous ride was a sport bike and it allowed for much more lean--and my familiarity with that may be the root of the problem. Do I just need to take corners slower on the Dyna? Should I go for some lower profile aftermarket pipes? Has this happened to anyone else?

welcome to the forum. were glad to see you here. you should pop into the new mwmbers section and introduce youself. also post a pic of your street bob....we love to see pics here. as far as scraping your exhaust pipe. the only non touring bike i owned was a heritage softail. i never scraped the pipe on that bike. i would guess you took the turn like you were riding a sport bike and that doest work well with a harley. slow it down a little and enjoy the ride.

Welcome aboard.

I've scraped the pipe twice on my Sportster 1200C. It has hit the peg both times as well, but I was already into the corner enough there was nothing I could do but let it grind. Both of mine were street corners in town as well. My thought it... if I wear out the muffler, its a good excuse for a slip-on. It doesn't happen often to me, so I'm not worried about it. Twice in 5,000, oh well.

One thing to keep an eye on (a problem of mine, so I thought I'd mention it) is that sometimes on slower corners I will just lean then bike, like I'm throwing it around something, w/o letting my body follow. This means I have to lean the bike farther than I would if I had leaned w/ it. I don't think this was the case the times I scrubbed the pipe, but who knows. Its just something I have to keep an eye on.

Thanks for the welcome. I will post to the new members section as soon as I have a picture. I have been unable to force myself off of the bike during sunny days and this has delayed camera work . It is pretty rainy here today and I'll bet that I get around to snapping a few this afternoon.
