This all happened 2 years ago and you're just getting around to it now? I'm sorry, but in my opinion if you or your wife felt you were being ripped off you should have refused to pay the bill and negotiated a better price 2 years ago.
The fee is high because the tow company expects the insurance to pay the bill.
This sounds like an unfortunately all too typical feature of our modern age. It's no different than the "$150 Tylenol tablets" on hospital bills. Everyone involved (the hospital and the insurance company) understands that that figure doesn't actually mean anything. It is just an opening salvo in a well-choreographed dance between the two.
The provider (ie, the hospital or the tow company) throws out an extremely high opening figure. The insurance company responds with a much lower figure. They work it out from there.
The mistake from the consumer point of view is thinking that these figures mean much of anything in the real world.
If you personally received a bill for that amount, and paid it, then you got hosed. Can't hurt to raise a fuss, but the time to gripe was before you paid.
They screwed you for sure. I seen them charging 280. An hour with 1 hour minimum in Colorado during a snow storm
50-75 for hookup plus 1.50 mile is average in my area

Just my $0.02
Happy New Year!
the problem with this entire thing was i was at deaths door at the time and in the hospital for a very long time afterwards and then went though a very long rehab process. no one was concerned at the time about the bike or the tow. it's taken me along time to get somewhat back to normal and started thinking about how this ***** took advantage while i was down. i'm to the point now that i know the moneys gone but revenge comes to mind. just wondering if this is a normal way they rip people off and why our local goverment allows it. the cops are most likely in on it. thanks for letting me vent and purge my anger. HAPPY NEW YEAR !
I despise tow company's. I heard one scumbag at breakfast telling his family how he loved it when people couldn't afford the towing and storage charges so he could file a storage lien and sell them off.

How can you make this leap that the cops are in on it? Let's see; you crashed. You were obviously injured. Someone called the accident in to the authorities. Police/EMS responded. Your bike had to be towed. A tow company from a rotation list responded, and somehow the cops are in on it? You are misplacing your anger. Why don't you share with us how the accident happened. Was there another vehicle involved? Were you the only participant? A lot of missing info here, but I think you are way off base with your comment.
Glad that you have recovered and I hope you can resume riding.
