Broken Ankle after Moto Spill: What to expect?
Now that you've had time to process your "event," what would you do differently?
After about 16 weeks or so, I went under the knife again. They screwed the screws almost all the way out and then put a tool on them and torqued them to see if the ligaments had healed. They knew the bone had because is it visible in the X-ray.
My ligaments held so he removed the pins completely, stapled the 3"or so incision shut and handed the screws to me when I woke up.
Prior the operation he gave me a Percocet prescription and my wife filled it on the way home. I thought that was a bit of overkill, but later that night I took 2 Percocet and was glad to have them. It felt like I had rebroken my ankle.
No pills needed after that but I've gotten used to pain.
Walking cast with a walker. No getting it wet until it heeled.
When he gave me the all clear after removing the staples, I folded up the walker and limped out and have never been on it since.
It will take a long while for your ankle to loosen up again. I am 9 months post accident and am walking fine, but still have stiffness in my ankle. I assume it will take about a year. Sports injury operations earlier in my life always took a full year to gain all the movement back too.
good luck. do what your dr and physical therapist tell you...

I'm glad it was my brake foot and not my shift foot! The ride home after the spill, I was working that front brake like a champ, haha.
Had my follow up today. Cast came off, and I'm in the boot! Still no weight, but I can take it off to sleep and bathe, which rules.
As as soon as we got home, I put my new drags on the sporty. Sounds like a real bike now. I'll need to rejet soon, but not before I can ride it.

I bought some really good ankle high boots to wear for support in the weeks after I got the boot off. I find I wear 'em all the time now.
It was twelve weeks from the time of the surgery until I was cleared to go about my regular life. Virtually the entire summer, June through Sept.
You're getting an earlier start. You should be good to go when prime time riding season gets here!

Us old coots take a lot longer to heal!
