In Florida helmets are optional. But I wear them 100% of the time. It is so frustrating, I was actually thinking about buying another helmet. LOL but I do not want to give up on this. Or spend the extra money.
Buzz, the helmet you have is worthless as an item of protective gear. If you are going to wear a helmet because you want to be better protected, then you have to get a decent helmet that will actually protect your head in a crash.
I'll give you an "A" for wanting to do the right thing.
But an "F" for actually doing it.
Go to a shop and try on some 1. Full face, 2. Modular, 3. 3/4 helmets. If it's not obvious their ranking as far as protection, ask.
You don't want to spend the money? The ongoing condition of your head is not something to be cheap with.

Good luck, ride safe.
Thank you my friend.........I understand what you are saying.
I do have a FF helmet. Recently tried on a 3/4 helmet again. It is not a matter of being cheap. Where I ride daily (365 days a year) and have an average of 6 stops a day, it is a major PIA to take the FF and the 3/4 helmet on and off over and over and over. YES I understand perfectly a 1/2 helmet gives less less protection than the other 2 aforementioned, but that is where I draw the line. Yes, I will wear a helmet but 1/2 is as far as I will go.
Half's do give quit a bit of protection. But the annoyance factor of the 3/4 (yes the 3/4) and FF are too much when doning them and removing them 6 times a day. Not fun and detracts too much for the added value of safety.
Don't yell at me, I know, I know. That is in part why I tried the 3/4 helmet on again. Yuk!
The half does give a fair amount of protection so I think u r not giving it as much credit as it deserves.
It would be interesting to see if a study (somehow) was done on the % increase of safety with a 3/4 and FF. Oh, modular too.
LOL I was saying don't yell at my in a joking manner my friend. You know, tongue in cheek kind of thing.
No worries.........and THANK YOU and everyone else for all of the GOOD input.

I understood you were joking, and that you were very appreciative of all the input. It's a great forum, and I consider everyone a friend I've never met.
What kind of helmet is it? I mean, what brand? I have 2 1/2 helmets.
The HCI, which is almost like a novelty, but is DOT, and the straps kind of did the same things, until the helmet broke in.
A GMax, where the strap is mucho better, but the helmet is a little shroomy.
I can wear either one. At first, with the HCI, I think I was pulling the strap a little too tight. I guess it stretched a little while riding, because now, it fits better. The GMAX is more comfy, but more ugly. Either helmet can be had for about 40 beans.

Having a friend who had her face reconstructed after being scrapped off in a cycle accident - I'll go FF or Modular all day, every day, no exceptions. I've gone down on my bike - the rash on my helmet would have been my face were it not a FF/Modular. Pretty sobering realization once it actually happens to you.
IMO - doesn't matter how many times you put it on/take it off a day - it's the same motion of donning the helmet and doing the strap.

Sry abt ur friend. I understand your sentiments abt a 3/4 or a FF.
It is the squeezing of the ears and HOT in S. Florida. BUT, I understand where u r coming from 100%. I just draw my line in a different place.
If I was hit with face rash, I would like say HELL YES!!! 3/4 and FF ALL day!!!
