I'm still not sure what qualifies someone. I've been to a few a AORs, been in a few "incoming attacks"...rocket, mortar, suicide bombers, etc. But I haven't returned fire. I was in a position to "help make the bad people die", and we did. Got back "inside the wire" during a mortar attack that at least one hit less than 100' away...had a suicide car bomb go off 50' away...multiple rocket attacks about 75' away...

I did have some HESCO barriers between me and them a couple times...other times I just ducked.

The history is the CVMA orginally wanted to be tied to (or sanctioned by) the VFW. The leadership of the VFW never responded. Based on Cowpokeys patch I see they changed there mind on having a motorcycle group.

Cowpokey-The membership requirements on the WEB site.

Man this is an old thread.

The part I'm confused with from their bylaws is:
http://combatvet.org/bylaws/
Who is a Veteran of a Foreign War, "Combat".
VFW National has approved "VFW Motorcycle Riders", it's not an MC.

I had the same issue with not getting a response, but HD Forum member "skratch" helped me get in contact with them and I just became a member this week.

Well, I hope to see you on the road then.

I don't want to get the thread shut down for promoting an organization but if you want to couple your love of riding with helping your fellow combat vets, consider joining.
As you may have read, we are a non-profit 501(c)(19) Tax- exempt organization whose mission is to support and defend those who have defended our country and our freedoms. Our focus is to help veteran care facilities provide a warm meal, clothing, shelter, and guidance, or simply to say "Thank you" and "Welcome home"! We orchestrate and participate in charity events and volunteer at local soldier homes and foundations.
Additionally, we get to enjoy riding and hanging out with our fellow brothers in arms. There is nothing quite like knocking back a few with some of these "old timers" and talking about just how f*%'d up our "jobs" were.

to be clear, neither are we. we are an association, not a club. we do not prospect, nor claim territory. we may have a chapter in a state, but we do not 'claim' that state.

we're a bunch of veterans, that have been to war, that want to help other vets out (combat or not), that happen to ride motorcycles.....

A few thoughts,

I am the Public Relations Officer for my chapter, NH 5-1 and I think, both locally and nationally that the CVMA is a damn fine group.

The focus is "Vets helping Vets" and I believe we do a good job of doing that at a very local level. Often times we work with other groups to help. In my area one of our members is the head of the Patriot Guard, we also have members on the State's Veterans Council and are linked to governmental and non-governmental support groups as well as the Veteran Homes in the area. We do a lot, but a lot of it is very quite. A vet who needs cloths or an apartment after a fire needs cloths and an apartment, not PR.

For anyone overseas, I believe membership is free while deployed, I know my chapter does it that way. If you are from NH, let me know and I will help.

Lastly, the CVMA has a tie in with the VFW, but it never developed fully and we went our own way. In my group, most members are also in the VFW and it is amazing how many past commanders there are.

Mike
