No compression inside the helmet. I was careful to shape the full head profile according to the inside dimensions of the helmet. Well actually only one helmet, since I used a jig saw once my template was made.
The top cross piece, I felt was supporting enough of the helmet where the weight was fairly well balanced.
As far as the plywood surfaces that contact the helmets, I sanded and rounded edges, then heavy coats of paint, so there is nothing rough touching the insides.
