Back in the day, besides motorcycles, it wasn't uncommon for many that drove cars and trucks to carry tools and maybe some misc. things so they could take care of minor issues, should they be forced to pull over alongside the road, it was just part of life for some. I've found that some habits are hard to break and many that I know still do it today.
