I'm in the market for a Road Glide Special in Velocity Red.

Took my 2012 Road King in to the dealer where I bought it new from and they gave me trade-in value of $9,800 (still owe $6,453 so it's only $3,357 trade in). The bike I want is $25,750 after TTL/fees.

I took the info of the trade-in and new bike to the fiance and she wasn't thrilled. I emailed him back and did some haggling offered to pay cash for the bike.

The dealer is offering the bike for $21,765 (AND TWO FREE T-SHIRTS!!!) out the door.

Bad price, OK price, Good price on the new bike?

I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to what bikes are going for now-a-days...any help from those smarter than myself would be GREATLY appreciated.

Tell your fiance that you're buying a shirt for yourself and of course one for her. Let her know they're a special blend of cotton and they will cost a combined 21,765 however, with the purchase they will throw in a free Road Glide Special

BTW, seems like a really good deal to my old eyes

Well, beings everyone buys a Harley just to be able to wear the shirts, I think you have a point....

Seems like a big drop in $$. What changed other than paying cash? I always thought dealers made a small vig on the loan.

From what the sales manager was saying, they don't make any money off loans. Whether that's true or not, I'm not sure.

The $25,750 (with TTL/fees) is before the $3,357 trade in ($9,800 minus what's left on the bike loan) so that gets it down to the $21,765 out the door.

The bike was around $23,750 then you figure it's $1,500-2,000ish for TTL gets it to $25,750. So I'm getting the bike for $19,765 plus $2,000ish for TTL. I think that seems correct?

I dunno but they seem pretty firm at $21,765 out the door. I told him the best I could do is $20,000 cash so we'll see if they come down or not. I'm going to play the $21,765 against the other 4 dealers around me and see if they won't go down to $20,000 or thrown in a passenger seat back or new bars.

If everyone here thinks $21,765 out the door is a good price for a 2017 Road Glide Special, I'll feel better about taking it as, like I said, I don't know how much things are going for now-a-days....

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. $21,765 plus $3357 down equals $25,122 out the door, on a bike that's $24,934 MSRP including freight. You're getting the bike for basically MSRP out the door, which is usually what I shoot for. Sometimes people get better deals, but unless you hit some sort of major special or get lucky otherwise I don't think they get better then that, especially on the exact model/color you want.

And up there, this is your prime riding weather - is it worth it to you to spend a week or so shopping around to maybe save a few hundred to a grand when you could be out riding?

I suggest looking up the trade-in value of your RK in the Kelley Blue Book and NADA Motorcycle Guide, to get an idea of what your bike is worth on the wholesale market.

MSRP less 20% + factory freight will get you pretty close to invoice on the new bike. Subtract your trade-in value from the invoice price and add what you feel is a reasonable profit. That number is the "trade difference". You'll have to add TTL (hopefully not a b/s "dealer fee") to get to OTD price.

What you owe on your bike should have nothing to do with what your trade-in value or the "trade difference" is. It will have a lot to do with the "amount financed".

Just so you are aware the dealership pays $19,245.00 for that bike before volume incentives etc. Rule of thumb on any new vehicle purchase is start from cost and work up. Never MSRP and down. Your trade in makes it more difficult to assess the deal.
