Default M8 engine flawed?

On another forum a poster suggested the M8 engine has the same design flaws as the other HD engines. A flaw HD will likely never correct. The post: Look at where the piston rods attach to the crankshaft and how they try to address the inherent balance problem.

Can somebody translate for a layman?

Well, since you can't see "where the piston rods attach to the crankshaft" in that photo, I don't know what he means.

My best guess is the use of a counter weight to reduce vibrations that are inherent characteristic with a V-twin cylinder engine.

Yeah, if he's talking about the counter shaft, then in my opinion he get's it exactly backwards.

The "flaw" isn't the inherent imbalance of the 45 degree V-Twin design. The "flaw" is trying to remove it.

I like the way the traditional (pre-balance shaft) HD motors run. Don't see the point in trying to turn it into something it's not.

That's why I love my Evo. The TC88B in my Heritage is so boring at idle.

I'm betting the V-twin will survive...

I believe OP was referring to the male & female connecting rods on a common crankpin using roller bearings. Most modern engines employ a side by side rod setup with plain bearings

But why is that a "design flaw"? Just because other manufacturers no longer do that doesn't make Harley "wrong". Side by side rods and plain bearings are cheaper to make, that's why other manufacturers do it.

The same people that are buying these things now and complaining about it, are the same people who complained about vibration on their older motors.

If you have an issue with vibration, you're buying the wrong bike. Get yourself a nice Jap sport tourer and move along.

Rigid mounts and hardtails
