why won't harley davidson give free updates on the gps? one would figure if you spend major bucks on a bike and update the boom audio, you should get more that the one orig download. $150 is a bit much for an update don't you think?

It's a money maker for HD. NaviExtras is a company in Hungary that subcontracts with HD. When you go to the Navi site and register your device, you see the Bar & Shield. AFAIK, Navi and HD are synonymous.
Quick story: I was traveling and another rider saw my out of state plates. We started talking and he told me the following story. He was having trouble with his navigation so he called the MoCo. The CSR told him to call Navi and the phone number was in the manual. He called and the same HD employee person answered the Navi number. The SOB should have helped him in the first place.
I was on the NaviExtras.com website and there was a chat pop-up. I said I would like to chat and when I told them I had a Harley, I was told to call the MoCo.
HD supports every aspect of the stock bike except map updates. They view that as the customer's responsibility and if they want to update the maps, the customer must work with Navi. The MoCo will not direct any dealers to support updating the maps.
I did post my experience in trying to use HD gift cards to update maps. It was appalling how many dealers lacked the training to update maps.
For one thing the updates do not come from HD. It's the same as with my Ford pick up truck.
They come from a company representing Harley and they direct you back to Harley when there is an issue. There is a copy written bar and shield on the Navi site when you register your cycle.
If you contacted the GPS/mapping company, would they tell you to contact Ford? If you went to the GPS/mapping site, would a chat pop-up tell you to contact Ford?

Harley is no different then any other out there updates up from the manufacturer have had other motorcycles same problems it depends on hoe much you use the navi system. I just find it easier to use my IPhone there are some great apps out there. Harley Davidsons Boom is one the the better systems out i have used.

I bought the update - it's $100 cheaper than the Cadillac update, and it was worth it to me. When you buy the update, you DON'T PAY HD. The Navi company isn't paid to "support" the GPS (probably because most of them don't even speak English); but they DO make and SELL the update.
I don't know what the hubbub is all about... most built-in GPS systems require a purchase to upgrade.
