Default HOG question

OK, so I have a question for the mass'...

When I got my first bike in '94, I joined the local HOG group. It was "ok" I guess. I really enjoyed riding with some of the riders, but others seemed to be a little fake(for lack of better terms). I seemed more comfortable doing my own thing or riding to other functions not related to the HOG group.

Having not riden in a few years and moving to Ga. in that timeframe I was curious what you guys thought about the HOG crowd vs other groups, ABATE comes to mind..

So, who do you associate with? HOG, another affiliation, or just private?

Thanks,

It is going to depend on the local chapter you ride with. Some are well organized and fun to ride with. Others may have rigid "rules" that suck the fun out of everything. And you will find the clique-ish ones as well that make you feel like a redheaded stepchild.

It varies.

I belong to a HOG group in Socal. Do maybe a dozen rides a year with the 'group' and find them well orgainized and fun, athough I do most of my riding solo.

This past weekend we had a progressive breakfast ride, I never attended one. 1st stop (all at HOG members houses) was juice, coffee, bagels, fruits, etc.

2nd stop had eggs, sausage, potatoes, drinks, etc. 3rd stop...dessert. Chocolate dipped strawberries, cake, cookies, water, soda, etc.

A very well organized and tastefull adventure. About 40 MC's attended, riding in groups of about 7. Again, well organized and fun. Total 160 miles. I would do it again. Cost = free. Paid for by our local chapter.

It's all about the folks in the group, any group. If you don't like what you see today try back later, as the group members change so does the personality of the group. I ride with our local HOG group and have a great time.I’ve ridden with other groups and haven’t seen much of a difference in what they do; they are out there to have fun as well. Sometimes in groups open to all brands I do get this sense of having to defend my choice, hard to explain that. In open groups I get that phony feeling. There are the folks that envy me because they want a Harley but tell me how great theirs is to justify why they bought it or the folks that say nice bike but loath it behind your back or even the folks that outright tell you they don’t like Harleys like I care about their opinion. In open groups I see more cliques as folks tend to hang out within their similar brand which is understandable. I also see a difference in the general age of the open groups, younger. Don’t have those worries in the HOG group; don’t have to defend why my bike is the way it is as we all have a common interest in bikes. Group riding is just something different to do. If I don’t like the group I find a different one, there are lots. Its fun sometimes kicking back and following the group to a place you never heard of via a road you never would have guessed existed and going to a restaurant or place someone in the group knows about that turns out great. I guess our HOG group is pretty cool because it’s a bunch of folks not worried about status and hierarchy, they just want to ride. Oh and did I mention eat, we seem to eat a lot in our group. I still value my solo or wife and me rides. Those rides are the best part and happen during the week and on Saturdays.

I tried the local group. I now belong to HOG National but don't belong to any local groups. I prefer riding alone.

Our HOG chapter is OK. I have quite a few friends in the chapter but I seldom do chapter rides. My wife and I prefer to ride by ourselves. We like the flexibility to change our route, stop when we feel like it and do what we want.
