Default Used Jacket Rant

I have now bought, from members on this forum, two used leather jackets in anticipation of the coming cooler weather and am not entirely satisfied with either. Both are genuine made-in-America jackets and probably weigh 10+ pounds each. The manufacturing of each is excellent, the problem is both are small. Both are size large, but every thing I wear is a large, and both of these jackets, while wearable, are small. Do motorcycle jackets, like British-made clothing, run small (by American standards)? One of the jackets has a two-way zipper to allow opening from the bottom, the other does not; providing for the Dolly Parton (man-*****) effect, bunching up over the chest. I live in a small hick-type town and the nearest motorcycle shop in which one could buy a chinese leather jacket is about 60 miles away. I swear, I'll ride nekked before I buy another piece of wearable gear over the internet. Thank you for your patience; rant over...

The jackets may have gotten wet which shrinks the leather a bit. You also haver an excure to lose a few pounds. Online shopping of used clothing is risky, there are no returns .

Op: I'm just curious. What isolated planet have you been living on, to not realize that every article of clothing is cut different, and sizes are not consistent. Heck, everything off the rack, for the same style, model, and size varies.

You are gambling buying clothing online, and double that for used.

If they are older jackets they were cut smaller, since most people were smaller back in the 80s and 90s. If I wear a size 8 now, I would get a "vintage" jacket in a 10 or even 12.

I know yours are American, but European clothes are cut differently too - usually on the smaller side.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck. Next time get measurements - shoulder to shoulder, shoulder to sleeve, waist, etc. and know you measurements. I have several times asked for measurements on ebay and it has saved me some money. Hope you find one that fits.

HD sold jackets are notoriously sized small, learned the hard way too but we're new so could return the online purchase. At 6'2 230lbs I'm wearing an XL size. 2x for HD lines

Every jacket manufacturer has their own size, there is no such thing a "standard" large.

You have to try them on. Or, you have to get an assurance that you can return it if it doesn't fit.

If you have a leather jacket that fits you, take measurements off it.

Zip it up and lay it down so you're looking at the back.
Measure shoulder to shoulder.
Measure armpit to armpit.
Measure top to bottom.
Measure length of arm, armpit to end of sleeve, top of shoulder to sleeve.

Use these measurements as a guideline for when you looking for a leather jacket online.

You can do this with chaps as well.

Edit: looks like traffic jam covered this information.

You need to measure pit to pit, waist, arm length and jacket length. There are illustrations online. Size means absolutely nothing. Could have been taken in, shrunk, etc.
