size 9, lots of life in them yet. they were just resoled before my feet grew. 2268 aren't available in the USA. they're only sold in the european and Japanese markets. i can't figure out what went into that decision by red wing management.
2268 are Red Wing Heritage for Europe and Japan. Look at 968, that is a very similar style (it's what I wear)- but it has a Vibram sole, which I prefer to the sole on the 2268 boots. Otherwise the boots are very similar. Same leather, buckles, etc......

i think the soles on the 2268's grip better than the 968's when you put your feet down. the soles on both styles wear like iron as well. i have a newer pair of 2268's that may have been the last pair sold in the USA by red wing. i talked one of the sales girls out of a pair at the red wing store in red wing, mn., i talked to her after the fact and it sounded like she may have been spoken to after management found out about it.
the pair on the right are my old riding boots. the all time classic and iconic 2268 red wing steel toe engineer boots that were bought in about 1983. my feet grew so they don't fit any more otherwise i would still be wearing them. they were replaced with the red wing 968's on the left. boot protectors? not for me but if anyone wants them......feel free to get them.
One thing oldtimers glance at looking at unknown folks is what's on their feet. Old, beat-up and stained by mud, blood and beer, boots on the right get a certain respect.
In my closet are two similar pairs only mine are thirty year-old Lucchese ropers.

I'm going against the grain on this one. I hate heel shifters so I take them off, I do a lot of shifting and the top of my toes get sore because the top of my boot gets soft. I don't think they would look so bad on black boots. Thank you to the OP for the info, my concern is they might slip around or feel odd walking.
