got a pair of Red Wings...don't know model, but they are nice waterproof brown leather, and they have one heck of a black mark from the shifter. took the heel shifter off when I got the bike....was in the way....and spent too many years with a toe shifter.
But I got no issues with the black shifter mark. Those who know, know!!!

Seems to me Harley made what they call a "Shift" boot which has the extra piece of leather already sewn in place. Actually I just searched Amazon and they do still make them:
