Being new to Harley and air cooled engines, is there a danger of engine damage from overheating of the engine? I plan on riding my '06 Superglide to visit my dad this afternoon. The last part is stop and go city traffic. Is going up to 95 here in central Ohio today. Will the bike be okay or not?
Me thinks your bike will be just fine. Lots of guys here live in AZ, TX and FL and ride them in much worse heat. I'd be more worried about me in the heat of stop and go traffic than the bike.
If your in stop and go traffic and happen to be not moving whereas your not getting air over the engine - pull over and shut her off. Buy one of those temp gauges that replaces your oil tank cap. If over 280 pull over and let her cool down.
Conventional oil will not return back to normal when it went over 280F. Synthetic will.
You should be okay. Some guys in the hot zones mount oil filters, but that's problematic in stop and go.
Nah, us guys in the cool zones...we don't worry about oil filters.
Shouldn't have a problem, I've sat in stop and go traffic out here in Virginia in 90+ degree heat with no problems. Of course, I was overheating...maybe I need an oil filter.
Thanks for the replies. Sounds like I should be okay. I did read a thread about the engine rpm dropping if it gets too hot and pinging. If this happens, I will pull over and wait a little for the engine to cool. I do have synthetic oil, so that should help too.
Thanks again,
Larry

If you read your manual you'll see a part on the Heat Management System. If the internal temp gets too high it shuts off the back cylinder and increases fuel to the mixture to lower the temp. The bike will run roughly when this happens.
