Had mine mounted on engine guard for a week long trip. Never had any issues with debris. Video was rock solid stable. Hero 5 Black

In that pic you can actually see my gopro mounted on the left hand crash bar, just above the highway peg. It's a 4 so it's in the waterproof case, all the protection I need. I also have a session that I mount in different places depending on the ride, including sometimes a "back of the hand" wrist mount. Allows me to literally "point" it in what ever direction I want.

Also, that picture was taken by my buddy's session mounted on the saddlebag guard pointing backwards. And as for clarity, that's a screen shot taken from video, so pretty high quality.

The piece shown in black below is what can break (although I've never had it happen to me)

On my WG I have it mounted on the bars in the triple clamp area with a go pro bar mount, on my RGU its on the fairing with a RickRak mount on neither on neither do i use a protective case.

GoPros have been used for many years in adverse conditions, My son used them for years racing MX where they were exposed to dirt, rocks, mud etc... with no issues. Clearly if you take a rock directly to the lens its likely ruined but on a HD on the street I would say the chances are slim

Ive got the Rickrak mount coming for my Limited to go to the fairing. My trip that I’m taking is to Alaska and that’s the reason was asking about the protection for it.

I couldn't get my GoPro housing screw to tighten down enough to keep it in place with the Ram ball mount so I went ahead and epoxied them together. I bought another housing for the camera so if I want to use it with a tripod, clamp, etc. I can take the camera out of one housing and put in another. Other than that, no problem with vibration, etc.

I love the RickRak mount it is extremely stable with no vibration. As I said IMHO I think the chances of damage by taking a rock to the lens is minimal but for a trip to AK I may elect to spend a few buck for the GOPro waterproof case just to give you extra protection. The cost is not that much and probably worth the peace of mind on a great trip like that

I used a hero 5 mounted to my handlebars up by the clutch lever on my heritage during a 2000 mile trip through yellow stone and the black hills. Worked great and didn't have any issues with it. I think I used a cheapy $10-$15 mount. Video came out clear and captured the guy in a Ford Expedition crossing the center line on a curve on the Bear Tooth Pass and almost taking me out.
