I would get a GoPro and mount it on the bike and plug it in. No need to worry about the battery then. I think that the helmet camera videos have too much movement to watch sometimes.

GoPro and similar cameras will give high pixel numbers like 4k, 20k, whatever, but the video will always be at 1080p. So unless your going to be taking pictures, why bother with the expense of the GoPro and their knock off's.

The Contour is only a 1080p video recorder. Older models come in 720p.

The GoPro mounted on the top of a helmet might give more options, but then your not going to be adjusting the thing while riding. You also have to become extremely familiar with them for turning it on and off while it's mounted to the top of the helmet.

The Contour mounts to the side of the helmet and has one button to push. Push for on, push and hold for off. It also has two lasers to help in aligning the lens so the video is level and you can turn it. (on the GoPro you can't) There is a slide button on top to start and stop the record. That's it!

Both can be mounted to your handlebars or bike frame, and both types generally come with plenty of mounts for you to chose from.

Personally I like the Contour, and mount it to the left side of my helmet. (you'd look more like a Borg than a TeleTubie) You can also upload the files to your computer VIA provided cord, or transfer the files from the memory card. The same for the GoPro.

Both types of cameras work well, so it really depends on your needs. Do you want video's only, or want the option of taking pictures too. Then too, you'd need to decide on the lens. More and more of these sport cameras are coming with wider and wider angle lens's. This basically means a fisheye type distortion.

Amazon should give you a wide selection of Sport Camera's, just search for Sport Camera and you will see thousands.
I also have a Contour HD-GPS (now sold as the Contour +2). I addition to everything Bonnie stated, the built in GPS is great. When you upload your video to the Storyteller App, it has a picture in picture that shows your speed, elevation and location that move as the video progresses. I have a helmet mount and an engine guard mount. Which one I use depends on what kind of ride I'm trying to record. If it is scenery, I use the helmet mount. For twisties, I use the engine guard mount.

Update : looks like I'll be buying the GoProHero 5 due to the GPS feature. Thank you all for your help

Thank you all. I'm now deciding between the GoPro HERO5 Session and the Contour+ 2. I like the GPS and removable battery in the contour. But the GoPro has it's perks too. They are both the same price so that's not a factor.

For those that have the Contour+ 2, how does the GPS work? Is it hard to use or is it simple?

Thanks all!

If you do go with the GoPro I would strongly urge you to put a safety line from the camera housing and attach it to something past the base mount. I just use fishing leader and a clip.

Doing that saved my GoPro twice.

Go on youtube and watch the Sony FDR-x3000 vs Gopros. The stabilizer is the best. I can't stand watching videos shaking all over the place. I'm probably going to get one.

Which is the best way to mount a camera on a Road Glide?

I used to have a Road King and mounted my contour on the running light bar, perfect placement. on my Road Glide I have tried mounting off my bars but I pick up my screen in the corner so no good.

I see the Contour 2+ has an external mic jack. That is good, however, I find it hard to justify the cost of a mic jack!

Long, long time ago I bought a cheap iON that only does 720P but like many point out I love the form factor. I also bought one of those cheap GoPro knockoffs a couple years ago and that is not a good config for a helmet cam.

In the meantime I am pondering the 1080P iON for $150 to replace my old one. Waterproof (I used mine to inspect the hull on my sailboat once...taped it to a boat hook and stuck it under water...kids use it for diving), easy to turn on and off with a glove, battery lasts a long time, and my old one is still ticking! I just wish iON would add a remote mic jack! Correction: while the iON website does not mention a mic jack it has one according to the reviews on YT. 1/8" jack for external mic!

I use two options.. Hog Collar around the fork with a SJCAM for video, hog collar works real well. And just strap a Canon camera around my neck for quick left handed shots when in Colorado, Tenn, (mountains) etc..
