I had a 96" 2010 Heritage Softail that I bought new.
I did a mild build myself, that I found to be extremely nice for power and extremely dependable. 10's of 1,000's of miles without a single issue.
Here is/was my build sheet, and what I paid for the items, which was in 2011 as I recall:
I also purchased and used to nice benefit; a TTS MasterTune software, hardware and ECM programming system. I probably would have been OK without this, but it was a lot of fun (for me) setting it up and dialing the engine in.
Also, I ran a set of V&H BSL's (which probably weren't the best power choice) and a regular Stage 1 Air Cleaner.
I bought a set of used cylinders to minimize the downtime of the bike. That way I had everything on hand before I tore anything apart.
One more thing to pay attention to is the reason I picked this particular camshaft for this engine. I could have saved a few $ by using SE255 Cams (as that is a common choice for the sort of performance I was seeking) but the dynamic compression would have almost certainly required compression releases. I also wanted the power and torque curve a few hundred RPM higher than the SE255's deliver.
