I had a 96" 2010 Heritage Softail that I bought new.

I did a mild build myself, that I found to be extremely nice for power and extremely dependable. 10's of 1,000's of miles without a single issue.

Here is/was my build sheet, and what I paid for the items, which was in 2011 as I recall:
  • KB409C, Kieth Black Silvolite 103" Hypereutectic Piston Set, $162.76
  • 26H, Andrews Camshafts, $295.00
  • SE Heavy Duty Clutch Spring $25.00
  • 0.030" Head Gasket, Cometic, $58.72
  • Used 96” Cylinders, $25.00
  • Bore 96” Cylinders for 103" Pistons, $150.00
  • RA8HC Champion Spark Plugs, $2.98 ($1.49 each)
  • Top end gasket set, $45.00

I also purchased and used to nice benefit; a TTS MasterTune software, hardware and ECM programming system. I probably would have been OK without this, but it was a lot of fun (for me) setting it up and dialing the engine in.

Also, I ran a set of V&H BSL's (which probably weren't the best power choice) and a regular Stage 1 Air Cleaner.

I bought a set of used cylinders to minimize the downtime of the bike. That way I had everything on hand before I tore anything apart.

One more thing to pay attention to is the reason I picked this particular camshaft for this engine. I could have saved a few $ by using SE255 Cams (as that is a common choice for the sort of performance I was seeking) but the dynamic compression would have almost certainly required compression releases. I also wanted the power and torque curve a few hundred RPM higher than the SE255's deliver.
